Going against the grain and eloping in Iceland? Hell yeah! For starters, congrats on choosing each other for eternity. Better yet congrats on choosing Iceland for the backdrop to your love story. I know I’m biased as a destination wedding and elopement photographer; but there is nothing like it. You’re in for a romantic adventure you’ll never forget. From the volcanic cliffs and black sand beaches to the moody skies and cinematic glaciers; this place really does know how to preserve your devotion.
But, listen, here’s the deal… Iceland is just as gorgeous as it is feral. In the best way, but also in a way that you simply need to be prepared for! That’s why I’ve put together this no-fluff, field-tested packing list to help you get out there. Because when you’re standing on a windswept bluff with your person, vows in hand, and mist from a waterfall catching the light just right; you don’t want to be worried about cold AF phalanges or a dead phone battery to call back home to ma’.
This guide is here to make sure you’re geared up for the magic and the mayhem. Because Iceland doesn’t hold back, and neither should you. Let’s get you packed, prepared, and stoked for the kind of day you’ll tell your grandkids about (heirloom photos and dramatic hand gestures included).
Here’s your Ultimate Packing List for Your Iceland Adventure Elopement:
Essentials for Baring the Elements
Poncho
The kind of rain that hits sideways? That’s Iceland. Keep a packable poncho on hand to throw over your dress or suit when the weather decides it needs more attention than you. Rude.
Waterproof Hiking Boots
Waterproof, broken-in boots are a non-negotiable, folks. There’s a good chance we will be trekking across lava fields, muddy trails, or the wild unknown of Iceland’s landscapes. & you’re going to want something that not only looks good; but actually gets the job done.
Layers / Puff Jacket
The weather in Iceland changes it’s mind just as fast as you did on a traditional wedding with a sparkler exit. Base layers and a solid puff jacket let you roll with whatever the skies throw your way; whether you’re hiking to a waterfall or slow dancing on a cliff. Stay warm, stay dry, stay immersed in one another knowing you’re prepared for whatever’s next.
White Insulated Leggings
If you’re wearing a dress, white insulated leggings are a quiet luxury. They hold in warmth without showing up in photos so you can move through the cold with ease – no blue skin, no compromises to your look. Just you and your person – steady in the moment.
Hand Warmers
Hand warmers are heavenly for Iceland elopements. Slip a few in every bag and pocket possible – even your partners. Thank me later.
Trail-Ready Gear
Hiking Backpack
Forgo your Jansport get up from the 90s and invest in a true hiking back that will take you and your love story wherever you need to go. I’m talking function over fashion here. I recommend ___ but any solid hiking backpack will carry you through!
Extra Pair of Socks
Dry socks are sacred in this part of the world. Bring backups. Plural.
Water & Snacks (lots of snacks)
We will be out exploring for hours. Pack energy bars, trail mix, and something sweet to keep your spirits and your blood sugar up. We can handle mostly anything that comes our way – but a hangry crew member is not one of them!
Speaker + Playlist
We love a trail DJ. Bring along a small Bluetooth speaker and we can vibe all the way to your vows.
Vows
Of the most important words you’ll say in your life? Yeah let’s laminate them or put them in a waterproof pouch.
Backcountry Style
Hair & Makeup Touch-Up Kit
From experience my Iceland elopement couples have found a hair and makeup touch-up kit to be a lifeline. After adventuring to our destination; you may want to freshen up and reapply for your elopement ceremony – look good, feel good!
Dress Bag
Keep your dress or suit tucked safe from wind, drizzle, and whatever else the great unknown throws your way. A lightweight, weatherproof garment bag lets you hike in your layers and change when the moment feels right.
Portable Steamer
P.S. if your dress, veil, or fit needs a quick steam before showtime, I highly recommend adding a portable steamer to this packing list!
Dress Shoes
If you’re all about authentic storytelling and long to promise forever in the boots that got you here? LET’S GO! However, my couples in the past have packed a pair of dress shoes that match their fit and not only do they photograph beautifully; it feels good to slip out of the hikers.
Mini Hairbrush
All for letting your hair down on this one, but you may want to throw in a mini hairbrush to style the stray strands in place.
Bobby Pins
My wife swears by a backup bobby pin. She told me to add this!
Travel Hairspray or Texture Spray
Just enough hold to keep things looking intentional, not chaotic.
Setting Powder
This addition came straight from my hair and makeup vendor partners. For shine control without overdoing it – setting powder is a game changer.
Lip Balm or Lip Tint
Iceland’s air is just about as dry as out West. You’re kissing partner will thank you for this one!
Q-Tips / Makeup Remover Wipes
For eyeliner smudges or wind-blown mascara moments.
SPF Tinted Moisturizer
SPF-tinted mouisturizer is your ride-or-die for protecting your skin without sacrificing that natural, just-got-engaged glow.
Compact Mirror
Because glaciers don’t always reflect well.
For the Open Road
Podcasts & a Playlist
Iceland roads are long, beautiful, and wide-open. Download beforehand to keep the vibes high.
Road Bingo
Because spotting wild horses, turf-roof houses, and endless waterfalls never gets old. Keep it fun between stops.
Coffee
This must-pack won’t come as a surprise from me. Pack the damn coffee – don’t get crazy.
Icelandic Hot Dog
Make this your first meal upon arrival. Trust me. There’s no better way to set the tone and feel like a local.
Tech & Travel Must-Haves
Sleeping Mask
The midnight sun doesn’t mess around—it’s beautiful, but it doesn’t care about your sleep schedule. A good sleeping mask will help you wind down and actually rest between travel, vows, and all the adrenaline. Trust me, you’ll want it.
Power Inverter / Voltage Converter
Iceland uses 230V and European plugs. Bring a good converter so you can charge everything without frying it.
Visa, Mastercard & Cash
Not everywhere takes Amex. And in rural spots, cash is king.
Starlink
In Iceland we only get 1 free GB of data a day and the service is spotty. Which is perfect for truly unplugging and peacing out online. However, if you need to work or stay somewhat alive on the internet – I recommend bringing a Starlink setup.
Final Ride-or-Dies
Patience
Patience goes a long way in Iceland. The weather changes, the light moves, and sometimes the plan demands flexibility. Let it. The most memorable moments usually aren’t the ones you storyboarded anyway.
Presence
Presence is the one thing you can’t buy, borrow, or pack last minute. However, it changes everything. Be where your feet are. Breathe in your surroundings and slow down with who’s in front of you. This is the whole point.
Bits
Listen – I know this is a serious adventure because you’re doing them damn thing and all…. But let’s not take ourselves too seriously here and have a good time in the wild! You don’t need a hundred things to elope in Iceland… just the right ones, folks. This isn’t about overpacking or over planning; it’s about showing up prepared so you can actually be there fully – soaking it in, holding each other close, and letting the land do what it does best: pull you deeper into the moment.
Whether you’re getting hitched in Black Beach, Skogafoss, or Vix; I’ll meet you there to document it all. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or want to chat through details behind your Iceland elopement. I’m here.
